The Montrose County Jail first opened its doors in 1882, a small, wooden structure on the corner of Main and Uncompahgre Streets in Montrose, Colorado. The jail initially housed only a few prisoners and was primarily used to hold individuals awaiting trial or transfer to regional prisons.

Expansion and Modernization
In 1921, the jail underwent a significant expansion to accommodate the county's growing population and rising crime rate. The wooden structure was replaced with a two-story, brick building, which included separate cells for male and female inmates.
During the 1970s and 1980s, the jail experienced further modernization to meet contemporary standards of corrections. New plumbing, electrical systems, and security measures were installed, and the jail's capacity was increased to over 100 inmates.
21st Century Renovations
In 2008, Montrose County embarked on a major renovation project to upgrade the jail's facilities and enhance security. The project included the construction of a new, state-of-the-art intake and processing center, which streamlined the booking process and improved inmate safety.

Today, the Montrose County Jail is a modern, secure facility that houses approximately 130 inmates. The jail provides a range of services to inmates, including medical and mental health care, educational programs, and vocational training.
